Department of Fire
This all volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1965 and is the sole fire suppression force for the Borough of Medford Lakes, a 1.25 mile square community located in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey. Fire duties are performed by an all volunteer force of 30 firefighters, all New Jersey State Firefighter certified. Additionally, there is a force of 4 Fire Police personnel supporting fire ground operations by assisting in crowd control and traffic management. alt

The department operates out of its central fire station located on Stokes Road at the entrance to Medford Lakes. Our equipment consists of 2 Class A NFPA compliant pumpers, a Special Operations truck, one 2,000 gallon water tanker, and a Command 4 wheel drive sport utility vehicle. Because Medford Lakes is a "Lake" community we have 16 foot and 14 foot boats with all necessary equipment to perform warm or cold water rescue. Not only are our firefighters trained in all facets of fire suppression and prevention but they are also trained in Vehicle Extrication. Confined Space Rescue and a myriad of other services performed by our modern fire service. MEET THE STAFF

"Mutual Aid" is the back bone of the volunteer fire service and our department is tied in with our neighboring communities of Medford Township, Shamong Township and Tabernacle Township. By combining forces through mutual aid we have a much greater capability to handled not only situations in Medford Lakes bu also in our neighboring towns. alt

The Medford Lakes Fire Department is gearing up for the new century and continues to improve its tactics and procedures to better serve out customers - the residents of Medford Lakes. Being an all volunteer force we are always looking for new members who would like to serve their community and have a sense of satisfaction by providing a very critical service. alt

Smoke Detector/CO Detector/Fire Extinguisher Inspection Requriements

A residential Smoke Detector/CO Detector/Fire Extinguisher inspection is performed in conjunction with the CCO (Certificate of Continued Occupancy) inspection. A simple application can be completed when applying for a residential CCO when selling or renting a home. Inspections will be scheduled depending on availability.  The cost of the Smoke Detector/CO Detector Compliance Certificate is $50 if scheduled 10 days prior to change of occupancy, $70.00 if scheduled 4-10 days  prior to change or $125 if scheduled less than 4 days prior.  Cash or Money Order are acceptable methods of payment. The Certificate issued is good for six months from the date of issuance. The following items are inspected so that a Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide Detector/ Compliance Certificate can be issued.

Operating Smoke Detectors must be installed on each level/floor of the home (basement included) and are required to be within ten feet of any sleeping area.  Original systems installed within the homes at the time of construction must be maintained (e.g. Interconnected systems cannot be replaced with a stand-alone battery- operated one).

Homeowners are required to install a carbon monoxide detector as per manufacturer installation instructions of the brand they choose.  A minimum of one (1) must be installed in the vicinity of all sleeping areas.  If bedrooms exist on more than one level, additional detectors are required to protect each area.  Instruction booklet/directions should be left for future homeowner.

All residential units must have a fire extinguisher rated for residential use.  It must be 2A-10BC-type and weigh no more than 10 lbs.  It is suggested that the extinguisher be placed in the kitchen cabinet under the sink or mounted within 10 feet of the kitchen.
